Bayelsa advance uncontested, as Delta grind out narrow win in women’s basketball

By Azuka Chiemeka

The women’s basketball event at the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) began on Thursday at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre, marked by contrasting outcomes in the opening matches.

Team Bayelsa claimed an unopposed victory after Team Abia withdrew from their scheduled clash due to logistical setbacks, granting Bayelsa automatic progression.

Meanwhile, Team Delta faced fierce resistance from Team Cross River in a tightly contested showdown. The Delta women’s team ultimately prevailed 44-39 points to clinch their first win of the festival.

Delta’s hard-fought triumph was anchored by captain Naomi Okoro, whose leadership and performance proved decisive.

Post-game, Okoro praised the tournament’s sponsors for the state-of-the-art facilities, stating: “The court allowed us to play our best and honour the sport we love.”
