Delta state men’s and women’s basketball teams did a double against rivals Cross River, as they picked valuable victories in their opening matches in the ongoing Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo.
Delta women’s team set the pace as they came from a six-point deficit to claim victory by 44-39 points in a game that was tightly contested.
Speaking after the encounter, Delta coach Joe Bozimo said they fought tirelessly for their victory and that the triumph would further boost their morale going into their next game.
“It’s was a well-deserved victory for my girls. We had to come from behind to win the game, which makes it more special for us. We will continue to work hard in every game and I know we will achieve greatness in this festival at the end,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Delta men’s team were heavily boosted with the victory of their women’s team, which propelled them to a right frame of mind to consolidate the day with victory too.
Like their women’s team, the men’s team came from 11 points deficit to triumph over hard-fighting Cross River by 55-51 points to ensure Team Delta did a double over their opponents.
Speaking after the tough encounter, Delta men’s basketball coach, Broadricks Peter said it was a well-deserved victory.
“When we were down by 11 points, I was still confident we can win the game. I told my boys it’s not over. We changed our tactics and it worked for us. We look forward to our next game,” he said.
Team Delta started their campaign in the basketball event with victories in the men’s and women’s categories against Cross River at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre in Uyo.
